Dandelion can supply antique stone troughs, both stone water troughs and stone feed troughs, ranging in size from 12 inches long to massive troughs over 8 feet long x 3 feet wide x 3 feet high. These massively carved stone troughs would be originally sited in large farms or industrial stables for draught horses as used for example by breweries and the railway companies. The enormous range of sizes reflect the original use: small, rectangular, roughly hewn stone troughs were probably used as foundation stones for vertical timber stanchions of barns. Small D-shaped troughs could be used for feeding geese and poultry, whilst long, narrow troughs would be used for calves or pigs.
Old stone sinks were originally to be found in country houses and farm kitchens (in the Pennines they were called 'Slopstones') - and were sometimes used as salting tables during the process of preserving meat, particularly pork. These shallow stone sinks, (being around 3" to 6" deep) usually display centuries of wear and are therefore, most attractive when used for the planting of colourful alpines, heathers and rockery plants.
Due to the ever burgeoning popularity for incorporating them into garden and landscaping designs, these beautiful, antique British and Irish stone troughs and sinks are becoming increasingly hard to find. However, at Dandelion, where we have a significant stock of stone troughs, if we haven't got the trough you desire, then due to our many contacts scattered throughout the British Isles, we can usually find that elusive stone trough for you. All you have to do is ask.
